About me

My name is Siao Yuong (Rong) Fong

I am currently Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Digital Media Industries at the department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries, King's College London. Prior to that, I have held academic positions in Lancaster University and the National University of Singapore.

I wasn't always an academic, though. I began my career as a TV producer in Singapore and worked in both international networks and local television. I also have 7 years of experience working in theatre production.

My previous work experiences shape my broad areas of interest as a scholar where I focus on several areas including global digital film and media industries, illiberal media, inter-asian production geopolitics and the media industries of small nations.

I approach my research primarily from media industries and creative labour perspectives, with particular focus on ethnographic approaches to studying everyday media practices in East and Southeast Asia.

I am committed to theorising from the ‘margins’ and advancing inter-Asian conversations in media studies. To facilitate dialogue around Asian media industries and media work, I co-founded the Asian Media Industries Research Network with Dr. Pei Sze Chow, a collaboration between King’s College London and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The network’s inaugural event, the International Symposium on Media Work in Asia, will be held in Singapore in July 2026.

I am currently Co-Editor of Cultural Commons and Book Reviews for the European Journal of Cultural Studies, and Editorial Advisor for Routledge Resources Online

In terms of teaching, I won a Faculty award for Internationalisation at Lancaster University in 2024, and was voted Seminar Leader of the Year 2025 at King's College London.

I'm available for speaking engagements.
